Yoruba for academic purpose

The first two scholars who used Yoruba to write their PhD dissertations were (i) Professor Akintunde Akinyemi. He is the current Chair, Department of African and Asian Languages and Literatures, University of Florida in Gainesville, USA and (ii) Professor Sola Adebajo, now retired. He taught Yoruba at the Department of Nigerian Languages and Literatures, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, Nigeria for many years. They wrote their PhD theses in 1990. They were both supervised by Professor Akinwumi Isola who was then at the Department of African Languages and Literatures, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Their external examiner was Professor Oludare Olajubu of the Department of Linguistics and Nigerian Languages, University of Ilorin, Nigeria. Their internal examiners were Professor Oyin Ogunba of the Department of English, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria and Professor (Mrs.) I.
